A Hidden Gem for Ganjang Gejang (Soy-Marinated Crab) in Incheon – Poongnyeonmiga
There’s a cozy local restaurant near my place that specializes in ganjang gejang — a traditional Korean dish made by marinating raw crabs in soy sauce. After walking past it so many times, I finally stopped by for a meal... and I was seriously impressed.
This restaurant is actually part of a small local chain based in Incheon. I visited the Dohwa branch, which is located in a rather unexpected area — the surroundings are mostly empty due to redevelopment, but this spot is still standing strong.
Opening Hours
🕚 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Last Order: 8:10 PM)
They also offer a discount if you pay in cash — a nice touch!
Right from the entrance, it’s clear this place takes pride in its ganjang gejang — and once you step inside, the space is more spacious than you'd expect. I visited during dinner time, and it was fairly quiet, which made for a peaceful meal.
I ordered Course D, which included a full ganjang gejang set meal with hot stone pot rice (dolsotbap). And let me tell you — the amount of food you get is amazing.
Aside from the marinated crab, the set included crispy fish cutlet, spicy pork (jeyuk bokkeum), a full crab stew, and an array of side dishes. This is a serious value-for-money meal, especially considering today’s prices.
They also offer à la carte items. Fried dishes seem aimed at kids, while other single plates could double as bar food or casual sides.
On each table, you’ll find the essentials — utensils, small plates, tissues, and even plastic gloves just for handling the crab. A must when eating ganjang gejang.
The Food Experience
The meal starts with a variety of 12 side dishes (banchan), and each one tasted homemade. The kimchi wasn’t the generic store-bought kind — it had that authentic, home-cooked flavor. I overheard that the owner is from Gwangju, a city known for its rich food culture — which totally explains the quality. Then came the star: the ganjang gejang.
Visually stunning, the crab had that glossy, rich soy sauce sheen — and when I cracked it open, the meat and roe were plentiful and full of umami flavor. It wasn’t just good — it was dangerously addictive.
Hidden beneath the crab were soy-marinated shrimp (saeujeot-style), and they were just as flavorful.
The fish cutlet added that nostalgic comfort food vibe, and the pork bulgogi came in a hot bubbling clay pot. The crab stew? It had a whole crab inside!
And don’t even get me started on the dolsotbap (hot stone rice) — it’s toasty, aromatic, and hearty enough that I could have eaten two bowls on its own.
Final Thoughts
Poongnyeonmiga in Dohwa-dong, Incheon, is a hidden gem — literally and figuratively. Tucked away in a quiet corner of a redeveloping neighborhood, it serves one of the most satisfying ganjang gejang meals I’ve had in a long time.
I usually don’t go for crab because of the hassle, but the crabs here were so meaty and well-prepared that it didn’t feel like a chore to eat. The addition of other items like pork and fish makes the set meal well-balanced and kid-friendly too.
With homemade side dishes, generous portions, and excellent quality, I’ll definitely be back.
If you ever find yourself in Incheon, and especially if you're curious about ganjang gejang, this is a place worth seeking out.
