While traveling in Thailand, I had the chance to try Boat Noodles, a local favorite, at a restaurant called Thong Smith. This place is part of a well-known Thai chain specializing in upgraded versions of traditional boat noodles.

Interestingly, this restaurant also gained popularity among Korean tourists after appearing on the variety show Earth Arcade (지구오락실).

The restaurant space is relatively small but features an open kitchen, allowing guests to watch the chefs prepare the food. Despite its size, the ambiance feels clean and upscale.

I visited the Central Embassy branch. Although Thong Smith has several branches throughout Bangkok, this review is based on my experience at that specific location. The restaurant is located on one of the upper floors—either the 4th or 5th floor (I believe it was the 5th). There's a separate food court in the basement, so make sure to head upstairs for Thong Smith.

Thong Smith offers a wide variety of noodle dishes. The pricing feels a bit higher compared to typical local eateries, likely due to the restaurant's premium positioning.

They also provide drinks and dessert menus, and there is a dessert store right next to the restaurant, seemingly under the same brand. When locals ordered desserts, they were brought over directly from that neighboring store.

When you're seated, you're given a menu along with an order sheet. You can select the dish you want and customize it—such as the type of noodles and spice level. The order sheet is available in English and Chinese only.

I started with crispy pork rinds, which had a satisfying crunch—like snacking on chips. It was a great appetizer to whet the appetite.
I also ordered Coke Zero, which I like to think made the meal a bit more diet-friendly.

Before the main dishes were served, I was given a plate of fresh basil and bean sprouts to add to the noodles as I pleased.

My main dishes were:

  • Spicy noodle soup

  • Stir-fried noodles

Both dishes were flavorful, though the total price came out higher than expected—about 40,000 KRW (roughly $30 USD). I did add a few toppings, so that contributed to the overall cost. Still, for the portion size, it didn’t feel particularly cheap.

Thong Smith is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Originally, boat noodles were known as a humble meal for workers, but this chain has done a great job elevating and modernizing the concept.

The customizable menu, the clean and stylish interior, and the opportunity to enjoy traditional Thai flavors in a hygienic environment make it a worthwhile experience—even if it's a bit pricier than local street food.

If you're curious to try a premium take on boat noodles, Thong Smith is definitely worth a visit.
